Magic of Homemade Tortillas

Posted by huntersofhappiness

A few Sundays ago we came home from church excited to make burritos for dinner. As I got out all of the ingredients I realized we were out of tortillas. I was SO bummed. I was so set on having burritos.
Lucky for me, I have a husband who served his LDS mission in Mexico and he quickly said we should just make them. Make tortillas? I didn’t know if it could be done, but we totally impressed ourselves! They would have never succeeded without Scott’s hispanic knowledge.
The first two we made were so thick that they were more like pita bread than tortillas. Then hubby remembered a trick he saw in Mexico. Cut a plastic bag  into a circle and put it between the dough and the rolling pin. It keeps the dough from sticking to the pin and also from shrinking. It makes them paper thin!!
We liked them so much we made them again, and again.  I wanted them to be a little healthier so we substituted white flour for whole wheat flour. Surprisingly, they were AWESOME! We love them even more than the plain flour ones.
Another plus is that making our own tortillas is CHEAP. And Scott has fun making them. Takes him right back to the good ole’ days in Mexico.
Homemade Flour or Whole Wheat Tortillas

 Ingredients:
2 cups all purpose flour (or whole wheat)
1/2 tsp Salt
3/4 Cup water
3 Tablespoons Olive Oil

Directions:
+Combine flour and salt.
+Stir in Water and Oil.
+On a floured surface (all purpose flour) knead the dough for 8-10 minutes -add water if needed or flour if sticky
+let the dough sit for 10 minutes
+On floured surface (all purpose) separate dough into 8-9 sections.
+Lightly flour the top of your dough, cover with plastic bag (cut into circle)and roll out into thin circle.
+ Cook on nonstick skillet sprayed with cooking spray at medium heat
+ cook each tortilla for about a minute on both sides

Serve them however you like!
We like to keep it healthy with taco seasoned ground turkey, black beans, corn, tomatoes, lettuce and salsa!
DELICIOUS.

I have always wanted to make homemade tortillas! Thanks so much for the post. This looks absolutely delightful. Your blog design is super cute too. I was wondering how you get the white space to blend? I am having trouble with that on my blog, my \”Follow me\” looks like it doesn't blend with the background white space.

I don't know if I'm just behind on the times, but I never knew that making tortillas was this simple (and with ingredients we always have in the house anyway!) We make quesadillas usually 1-2 week, and buying the tortillas is always a hassle and sometimes pricey depending on the sale (or lack of)! Thanks so much for sharing this amazingly easy recipe!!! 🙂

That tip with the plastic bag is genius. We tried to make them while living in Cambodia because there's no place to buy them and they would always turn out kind of crispy. Maybt it was because we didn't use olive oil, we used this fake margarine thing. I never thought of olive oil!

Hi Elise!I only recently discovered your blog, but I am loving it! I'm also a newlywed (1 month!) and we just moved to Hong Kong so tortillas are in short supply – this plastic bag trick is brilliant! Keep up the good work – Ellyse (nice name too!)
