How to Build a Basic Cabinet with Doors- Tutorial

Posted by huntersofhappiness
As part of the office built-ins, I needed to build two cabinets with cabinet doors. I got a lot of questions about how I did this! It is much more intimidating than it looks! Here is a step by step tutorial!
Materials you’ll need:
3/4 inch plywood
1/4 inch plywood
1/2 inch plywood
1×2 boards
1×4 board(s)
Wood Glue
Kreg 1 1/4 screws
concealed hinges
2×4’s and 2 1/2 inch screws for base
1 1/4 inch brad nails
Tools:
Table Saw
90 Degree Clamp
Clamps
Kreg Pocket Hole Jig
Kreg Concealed Hinge Jig
Drill
Nail Gun
BASE:

This is a personal preference and specific to some projects, but I usually build a base for my cabinet to sit on. This raises the cabinet off the floor and allows me to wrap the base with baseboard. This gives it more of a built-in look! My baseboards are 5 inches tall so I build a box with 2x4s placing them with the 3 1/2 inch height. On top of the box, I lay 2×4’s this time flat with the 1 1/2 inch height (like the photo above). You might need to make this differently if you have different height baseboards.
STEP 1:
Your measurements will obviously be different than mine, so find the height, width and depth you need for your cabinet first. Then use the table saw to cut your 3/4 inch plywood for the two sides of the cabinet and the base.
Then use the Kreg pocket hole Jig to put pocket holes about every 4 inches along one bottom edge of the side pieces.
Put wood glue along the bottom edge of the board and then use the 90-degree clamp to ensure a perfect square corner. With the clamp in place, screw Kreg screws through pocket holes.

STEP 2:

Add top supports. Cut 1×4’s to length and add 2 pocket holes to the ends. Attach them at the top corners using screws. If you are not adding some type of countertop on top of the cabinet you can add a full top instead of the supports. It is just a cheaper and effective way if you are installing a top.

STEP 3:

Use the table saw to cut 1/4 inch plywood to fit the back of your cabinet. Use the nail gun and brad nails to attach it.
FACE FRAME
Cut 1×2 boards to length for a face frame.
Make a frame by using pocket holes, wood glue and screws (as shown above).
Attach the face frame with wood glue and a few brad nails.

CABINET DOORS

This is the easy and technically wrong way to make cabinet doors, personally I think they look great! One day when I have a router I will try it the “right” way!

Step 1:

Use the table saw to cut 1/2 inch plywood to the size you need your cabinet door to be PLUS 1/4 inch on the height and the width.
Cut 1/4 inch plywood with the table saw to make your trim. Make the width 1/8 inch wider than you want it to end up.
Use wood glue and clamps to attach the trim to the 1/2 inch plywood board.
Once the glue is very dry, take off 1/8 inch from each side (height and width) using the table saw. This gives it a clean, uniform edge. Sand all the edges.

Then use a concealed hinge jig and follow the instructions. I did a 1/2 inch overlay hinge and made my doors to fit that size.
THESE are the hinges I used and I really like them!
I couldn’t be happier with the finished product!
