2 Day Gender Neutral Shared Toddler/Nursery Makeover

I had the opportunity last summer to surprise my sister-in-law with a nursery/shared toddler room makeover!  It was so much fun, and I think I need to do more surprise makeovers this coming year!

She wanted something calming ✔️ Something she could take with her if she moves from the house ✔️ and something gender neutral for her little girl and baby boy! It was such a fun challenge to makeover this room in such a short amount of time and on a budget!

This is what the room looked like when I started:

The first thing I knew I needed to do was brighten up the room with some neutral paint.  I went with Rock Candy from Behr and it instantly made the room feel bigger!

We were able to reuse the white crib, but I wanted to make the dresser match.  A quick couple coats of paint and new hardware and it was like we had a brand new dresser!  TIP: make sure you use an extreme bond primer when painting wood for a solid, smooth finish.

You know I like a little “extra” in everything I do, so I knew I had to do something special for this room.  Per my sister-in-law’s request of having this room movable, I decided to make a big accent art piece.  I had done something like this on a smaller scale, so I just used the same method and made it a “little” bigger.

For this art, I used a 1/4 inch sheet of plywood and painted it Silky White from Behr, and trimmed it with the same color as the walls.  Then, I free-handed “i love you”, using a board to keep my lines level.  For the lettering color, I used Carbon Copy by Behr.  For the frame, I used raw 1X2 pine boards.  I cut them to length, and then wood glued.  Once the glue was dry, I attached the frame to the back with 3/4 inch screws.

Next, we added a few final touches- new curtains and a new rug- and we were done!

2 days, minimal investment, and a brand new room!
