$10 DIY “Hello Fall” Sign

I love seasonal signs, but they can get so spendy!  So I figured, why not make them myself?!
For this sign, you will need:

Materials:

  • 1/4 inch plywood (you can buy either 1/4, 1/2 or a full sheet)
  • 1 X 2 boards- common or pine (enough to frame your sign, whatever size you choose)
  • Paint
  • Wood Glue

Tools

  • Jigsaw
  • Table saw or router

Instructions

  1. Cut your plywood to size.  I made this sign 2 foot by 2 foot. Paint it your desired color. Then, cut another 2X2 plywood for your “mat”.  I chose to make my mat 3 inches, and cut it out with a jig saw. (TIP- use a drill bit to make a “starter hole” and start your jigsaw cut.)
  2. While the paint is drying, cut your 1 X 2’s to size.  I cut four 2 foot boards.
  3. Next, set your table saw blade height to a lower setting, so you don’t cut through your 1×2 boards.  You want to make a notch to grab around the 1/4 inch plywood sign.
  4. Set the distance on your table saw to 3/4 inch.  That will make your groove in the center. (fun fact- 2 inch boards are actually 1 1/2 inches!  Make sure you measure your board first so you are in the center of the board)
  5. My table saw blade is 1/8 inch, so I scoot my distance over 1/8 of an inch and make another 3 passes with my board to make a 1/2 inch groove to accommodate my mat and sign.  Repeat this process on all 4 frame boards.
  6. Paint your frame boards.  I chose black for this project.
  7. Use wood glue to attach your frame to your boards.  You can use clamps or finish nails to hold them in place until the glue dries.
  8. Letter!  If you enjoy hand lettering, you can free hand it yourself.  Or, you can purchase vinyl lettering and place it on the sign.

BONUS:  I painted the back of the sign white as well so I can do a Christmas saying on the back and flip it!  2 signs for the price of one!
