Plaid Wainscoating in Half Bathroom

I have a half bathroom in our house that was quite honestly boring.  I think most half baths are boring because of their size, and they don’t always get a lot of use.  If you’ve been following along with me on Instagram for long, you know I’m the queen of “extra”, and so I knew I had to do something in this room to make it “extra”.  My friend, Christine, did a complete makeover in Jordan Page’s office and I fell IN LOVE with her accent wall.  So I thought why not give it a try here!
This project was WAY more tedious than I anticipated it to be.  Altogether, I had 12 hours in cutting & nailing, 9 hours in caulking, 3 hours in wood filling, 2 hours in painting, an hour in drawing an art piece, plus undocumented time installing a new vanity and hooking up the plumbing.  But it was 100% worth it.

TOOLS NEEDED:

  • Miter saw
  • Sander
  • Brad nailer (air nail gun)

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • 1X2 boards (pine or common- if using common, double check them to make sure they are straight!)
  • Wood filler
  • Sand paper
  • Caulk
  • Brad nails
  • Primer
  • Paint

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Measure out your lines.  Decide the distance you want and make your markings on the wall.  For this project, I used a grouping of three 1X2 boards and then spaced them 1 inch a part.  Then I did 24 inches in between each grouping of three.  Personally, I started with the vertical boards first, and then did the horizontal boards second (you will make more cuts for your horizontal boards).
  2. Once all my 1×2 boards were nailed, I decided to add an extra 1/2 inch accent grid to the center of my plaid grid.  This step is 100% optional.
  3. Next, you need to caulk ALL the seams.  TIP: keep baby wipes handy!  Take your caulk gun and make a bead along the seam, and then smooth with your finger tip.  Wipe any excess with the baby wipe!
  4. Use your wood filler to fill all your nail holes.  Again, this is a very tedious step but will make all the difference in making your project look professional!
  5. Sand all your boards to make sure your wood filler is level with the board and not “chunky”.  This will make your boards appear seamless!
  6. Prime & Paint!  I tried out several samples of green paint for this project, but ending up using Dried Thyme from Sherwin Williams.  It was better than I imagined it would be!

The GREEN.  It was the perfect moody, dramatic color I was looking for!  Plus, it’s so fun to play around with colors in small spaces like this!

The “Extras”

If you were following along on Instagram, you know that I didn’t originally plan to replace the builder grade vanity.  However, I cracked it when I was taking down the old mirror- so it was meant to be!  And, how beautiful is this new vanity?!  I am in LOVE!

AND, to be just a little “extra”, I grabbed some scraps from the garage and threw this little step stool together!  Now the girls can wash their hands without my help!
