Pocket Hole Basics for Beginners

Before I started DIY projects on my own, I had never made a pocket hole in my life.  I’m not sure why, but they were incredibly intimidating for me.  However, after I made my first project with pocket holes I was literally addicted!  Now I use them in almost every project- I try to find excuses to use them!
The only tools you need to make your pocket hole is a Kreg Jig and a drill.  There are a few different models of Kreg Jigs, from extremely basic to deluxe.  All models work well to make pocket holes, but I would suggest making your selection based off how often you plan to use the jig.  If you are using the basic version, you will also need a clamp to hold your jig in place.  The basic version looks like this:

To start your pocket holes, first measure out where you would like to position your holes.  There are 2 ways to make pocket holes- 1. On the face of the wood (for example, when making a frame) and 2. In the inside corner (for example, when constructing a box).  The two examples are below.

Once you have determined where you will be drilling your pocket holes (mark your measurements) set your jig to the depth you desire.  Ideally, you want to be just short of poking through the board to get a good hold.

Then, attach your jig to the board either with a clamp or the jig itself if you are using a deluxe version.  Place the jig square with your board by using the small lip on the edge of the jig (pictured below).

When your jig is secure, use your drill and bit to make your pocket hole.

After your hole is created, remove the jig and secure your other board with a clamp.  I also use wood glue inside the seam for extra hold.

Use your drill to insert your hardware into the pocket hole.  I prefer to use an extended bit.

And that is it!  I told you, it is seriously one of the easiest DIY methods and I use it ALL the time!  Now go and try pocket holes for yourself, and share your projects below!
